Postás Kupa Trail-O 18-as pont – Control 18

Ez volt az utolsó pont a T3 és T4 elõtt. Eddigre már mindenki nagyon fáradt lehetett. Szóval nem akartam túl nehéz pontot ide. Bár voltak kételyeim itt is a sziklák ábrázolása miatt, úgy éreztem, hogy könnyen kisüthetõ, melyik szikla van a térképen és melyik nincs. A legfelsõ és a legalsó nem volt fönt a mérete miatt és így kibogozható volt, hogy melyiknél van a kör közepe. Majdnem 70%-nak sikerült a jó válasz, így talán ezért nem sokan haragusznak rám. :-)

This was the last control before T3 and T4. I assumed everybody would be very tired by now, so I tried to put in a fairly easy last control. I had doubts about the representation of the rock features here as well, but decided that the size of the unmapped crags was noticeably small, so it would be easy to work out which rock was and which wasn’t on the map. The furthest, highest one and the lowest, closest one were unmapped. As long as that was realised, the answer was extremely easy. Nearly 70% got it right, so hopefully not too many people are angry with me for this one! :-)

Postás Kupa Trail-O 6-os pont – Control 6

Itt a megoldás titka az volt, hogy valakinek feltünjön, hogy van egy másik mészégetõ is. Ehhez viszonylag jól kifejlõdött távolság megítélésre volt szükség és arra, hogy feltünjön a második mészégetõ a térképen. Ha valaki jól megnézte a bójákat, nyilvánvalóvá vált, hogy a NP felé már több nincs, így mögötte kell, hogy legyen Viszont a bóják meg nem azon voltak. Így Z a válasz. Az irányt is le lehetett venni a sziklafal végétõl, de az nem volt annyira biztos módszer, mint a fenti megoldás.

At 60% success rate, this is counted as a fairly easy Z. The problem could be solved by distance estimation and by a bearing from the end of the cliff face to the flags, although that was dependent on the question of a Z occurring to people in the first place, as the further depression was barely visible. When examining the flags, it became quite obvious that there were no more depressions between the VP and them, so they could not be on the further depression. Thus the answer had to be Z.

Postás Kupa Trail-O 4-es pont – Control 4

Ez megint egy olyan pont volt, amit Dick Keighley nem engedett volna meg és valószínüleg igaza lett volna. Mint õ mondta, csak olyan tereptárgyra lehet pontot rakni, ami rajta van a térképen. A kis völgy, ami látható volt a terepen, nem volt rajta a térképen, mivel én elfelejtettem felrajzolni rá. Ezen a részen elég sok javításra volt szükség, de ez el lett felejtve. Sorry!! A választ a következõ tereptárgyak adták: az orr és a sziklafal, ami balra volt a bójáktól és a mészégetõ töltésének az északkeleti vége. Ha ezekhez hasonlítottátok a bóják pozicióját, akkor a B túl lent és közel volt, míg a C túl mgasan és túl a mészégetõ bejáratán a kör közepéhez képest.

This was another control Dick Keighley would not have let me have and I suspect he was probably right. He explained to me (not for the first time, I am sorry to say) that you cannot put a control point on a feature that is not on the map. I described this control as a re-entrant, but there was no such feature on the map. There was a small re-entrant on the ground, but I forgot to put a form line on the map, as I intended. I did quite a lot of map corrections at this point, but this got forgotten. Sorry! Anyway, the solution method included considering the flags against the position of the spur to the left, the crag to the left and the end of the horseshoe shaped earth wall to the right. When the centre of the circle was compared to the position of these features, B was proved to be too far down and too close, while C was too high and beyond the north eastern end of the horseshow shaped earth wall. Unfortunately less than 30% of you were correct here, so perhaps Dick was right. May I also add that the use of that special symbol for the horseshoe shaped earth wall, which the IOF Adviser of the Foot-O World Champs had sanctioned for WOC in August, does not particularly assist Trail-O, but there you are!

Postás Kupa Trail-O 2-es pont – Control 2

Itt maga a terep adta a Z pont lehetõségét. A két elhagyott bánya egymás fölött volt, így egyszerü volt a sürü erdõben úgy variálni a pontokat, hogy ne legyen nagyon látható, hogy A, C és D a felsõ bányában vannak és a B ugyan az alsóban, de rossz helyen. Ha visszafelé ment valaki a rajt felé és onnan nézte, bár onnan a bójákat alig lehetett lárni, a kettõs bánya domborzata világosabbá vált, mint a NP-tól.

This was a classic case of the terrain suggesting the possibility of planning a Z control. With two identical features above each other, coupled with thick forest, one could quite easily put out 4 flags, which could have been anywhere. Those, who thought of having a look by walking back towards the Start could discern the landforms easier, even though the flags were hardly visible from there. From the VP you could see that A, C and D are too high and B on the lower feature, but in the wrong place.

Postás Kupa Trail-O 1-es pont – Control 1

Mivel újabban nem volt túl sok megjegyzés a blogon, így gondoltam elindulok sorrendben a pontokkal. Az egyes pont szerintem nem volt túl nehéz, amit a 60% sikeres válasz talán bizonyít. Itt azt kellett eldönteni, hogy melyik szikla van és melyik nincs a térképen. Ugyanakkor a magasság becslés is fontos volt, mert a B és a C viszonylag közel voltak irányban. Pontos támpont itt nem nagyon volt, de mivel az A, B és a D mind túl magasan voltak sokkal alacsonyabb sziklákon, mint a C, így reméltem, hogy nyilvánvaló lesz a helyes válasz.

As there haven’t been too many comments/requests lately on the blog I thought I would start putting up the solutions in numerical order, starting with Control 1. This was not a particularly difficult control, provided one could work out which rock features were and which were not on the map. Another skill coming into solving it was an estimation of height. Especially that B and C were almost on the same line from the VP. As the terrain did not provide any cast iron features for finding the answer, I thought that if I put all the wrong flags much higher up and on unmapped, less than 1m high crags, the answer might jump out. I am sorry if it didn’t.

Postás Kupa Trail-O 11-es pont – Control 11

Ennél a pontnál sokat szöszmötöltünk, hogy megbízhatóan vannak-e ábrázolva a sziklák. Ezen a környéken kicsit kételyeim voltak ebben a témában, legfõképpen a 11-es és 12-es pontnál. Végül úgy döntöttünk, hogy bár kicsit következetlenek voltak a méretek, gondos megfontolással azonosíthatóak voltak a sziklák, sziklafalak és hogy melyek nincsenek a térképen. Ha ezzel Ti nem értetek egyet, már elõre kérek bocsánatot.

Ennek a pontnak a megoldása azon állott vagy bukott, hogy hol van a két pont ami között meg kell találni a félutat. A NP-ból jól látszott egy szikla az úthoz közel, a nagy felsõ szikla is, de ezen kettõn kívül volt még kettõ. Az egyik, a legközelebbi, az még fél méter sem volt, de a másik, ami az alsó és a nagy sziklafal között volt az majdnem 1m volt. Ez a kettõ nem volt rajta a térképen. Itt azt kellett megfejteni, hogy ezekbõl melyik van rajta a térképen. A magasabb, de még az úthoz viszonylag közeli volt rajta a térképen. Na most az is benne van a szabályzatban, hogy ha “között” van a szimbólban, akkor pontosan félúton azon a vonalon kell lennie a bójának, ami képzeletben összeköti a két tereptárgy egymáshoz legközelebbi részét. A magasabb szilatömb és a fenti sziklafal kiszögellése közötti vonalat nagyon jól meg lehetett nézni lentrõl és így jött ki a D. Az A egészen fent volt a sziklafal mellett, a B a képzeletbeli vonaltól balra, míg a C egészen a térképen nem levõ szikla mellett a vonaltól jobbra volt. Elnézést ha a bóják itt nagyon közel voltak egymáshoz, de úgy éreztem, hogy az egész csoport annyira közel van, hogy így is megkülönböztethetõek.

When planning this control, we had our doubts as to the design of the rock features in this area. We felt that there was more rock on the ground than could be properly represented on the map, even if they were over 1m high. Finally we went for it, as we felt that with careful map reading and relating the rock features to each other, the correct answer could be worked out.

The solution was found in working out which two bits of rock the correct flag was halfway between. When looking from the VP you could see one big rock face higher than the rest plus three smaller rocks below. The map showed the upper rock face reasonably accurately, but could only show one of the other three closer to the road. Looking at the centre of the circle and examining the size and position of the features it could be deduced that the one closest to the VP was well below 1m high and the one just under the tip of the upper rock face was too close to it and possibly not quite 1m. The highest and closest to the road boulder had to be the one on the map. Drawing the imaginary line between the boulder and the rock face at its closest point to it eliminated B as it was to the left of the line and C as it was to the right of the line. A was too high, so the answer was D.

Postás Kupa Trail-O 8-as pont – Control 8

Ez volt egyike azoknak a pontoknak, amirõl Dick Keighley, a Trail-O VB ellenõrzõbírója azt mondta nekem a verseny után, hogy ha õ lett volna az ellenõrzõbírója ennek a versenynek, akkor ezt nem engedte volna meg. Az ok: nem pöttyös, tehát jellegtelen jelleghatárra, nem szabad Trail-O pontot rakni. Hát mindig tanul az ember valamit!!

Szerintem úgy az A, mint a B kiküszöbölhetõ volt. Az A azért, mert túl lent és túl messze volt a nyilvánvalóan bozótostól; a B azért, mert túl magasan és hátul volt. Marad a C vagy D. A D egy olyan helyen volt, ahol a bozót sokkal sürübb és nyilvánvalóbb volt, mint a C helye. Ugyanakkor ha leléptétek a nézõpontot a keletre levõ szárazároktól és ezek után levettétek az irányt a NP-ból, az tisztán a C-t adta. Volt ott egy sziklafal is, aminek a helyzetébõl is ki lehetett következtetni, hogy a D már túl keletre van a kör közepétõl.

This was one of the controls that Dick Keighley WTOC IOF Advisor told me that had he been the Controller of this event would not have been allowed. Apparently one mustn’t put Trail-O controls on indistinct vegetation boundaries. Well, one never stops learning, doesn’t one?

As for the solution: In my opinion A and B could be quite quickly eliminated. A was too far down and too far to the West, nowhere near the thicket; B because it was too far back and far too high. This left C or D. Admittedly, D looked the most likely based on vegetation as the thicket was thickest right next to it. However, the position of the VP could be quite easily fixed by measurement from the road/dry ditch junction to the East and a bearing from the VP would leave no doubt that C was in the centre of the circle. The position of the crag on the map and on the ground (while a tad small) also showed clearly that D was far too far to the East from the centre of the circle.
